Spaces & Places

Spaces where memories reside can be contestable, but manifest bodily in the mind, gut, or senses; or in photographs and the landscape; or in the eccentric spaces of the house. This latter, intriguing idea came from The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard, which outlines the symbolism in a house, going room by room, space by space, to explain the connection between memory and sheltered spaces. The spaces of a home (including the smaller homes within homes, such as boxes, drawers, cupboards, chests, and pantries, and alternate houses, like nests and shells) can be thought of metaphorically as memory living within protected and sheltered spaces and places that allow room, time, solitude, and freedom for reflection.
